We’re still waiting patiently for the Pixel Tablet, a device Google announced in May 2022 and set to launch later this year – but a new pair of leaks give us a better idea of what to expect when the device finally arrives .
Primarily a Twitter punter SnoopyTech (opens in a new tab) posted photos of what is purportedly a Google Pixel tablet stand, a docking station for the new tablet that will essentially turn it into a Google Nest Hub Max when you’re not carrying it around.
Google has previously mentioned something called a charging dock for speakers to do the job, but it has been said that two docks are being developed – one with a speaker and one without. It’s not clear which one it is.

Welcome to Hub Mode
Then we also have some updates from 9to5Google (opens in a new tab): The team there has been digging into the code for the Google Home app, and some snippets mentioning the Pixel tablet appear before the tablet launches.
Apparently, the Pixel tablet will go into what is known as “hub mode” when placed in the dock. This mode will allow it to receive Google Cast content just like a Chromecast dongle does.
Again, there is mention of two different docks. It looks like these docks will work much like smart speakers like the Google Nest Mini, although there may be some limits to what you can do with them.
Analysis: following in Amazon’s footsteps
If the idea of a tablet that can be turned into a smart display sounds familiar, that’s because Amazon has already done it – note that tablets like the Amazon Fire HD 10 can work in something called show mode, essentially turning them into an Echo program show.
In other words, you can invoke Alexa commands and view responses on your tablet, as you would with something like the Echo Show 10. There are also official charging stations for Fire HD tablets that blur the lines between products even further.
This move makes sense as you won’t always be carrying a tablet with you. Place it in the docking station and not only can it charge, but it can also listen to and respond to voice commands – just like one of the best smart displays.
We can expect something similar from Apple in the not too distant future. The HomePod 2 has just been launched and rumor has it that Apple’s next smart speaker will feature an iPad-like display.
